Imo it is the same (thumb ?) drive. The designation is variable depending on
how many drives are plugged in (and in which order).
The "uuid" would clarify this.
I would like to see the "sdb / sdc" line of cat /proc/mounts

Re: I don't understand...
guys...
I see this in a former post by movobojo
Means Internal HDD, 3 partitions (sda1,2,3), 1st usb-drive 1 partition (sdb1),
(could also be a 2nd internal HDD, but not in this case)
and the usb-drive in question sdc without partition number.
now, (for example), pull out both usb drives and then plug in only the 2nd one (formerly sdc)
it will now be sdb as we can see in a later post.
again, sdb without a partition number...there was no sdb,but sdc, in the former post.
That's why i think sdb/sdc is the same device.
Now the question is why only sdc/b and not e.g sdc1
Either the (linux mint) usb-tools misconfigured the device or simply dd the porteus iso
onto the drive.
That's why the outcome of cat /proc/mounts could be a step forward because if there is
a line like
/dev/sdb /mnt/sdb iso9660 ro,noatime,nodiratime 0 0
we would know why it doesn't work as expected.

I think a system information dump would reveal much.
How do i become super user?

For Bogomist:
...
So should I do something more? I thing I should plug in an another USB stick and install another Porteus from current Porteus and I thing everything should be OK then. Or should I keep my current set so I can send an output from my terminal to you guys?
...
I don't know how to create a system information dump...
...
sdb1 is just my external 1TB HDD with some data - it shouldn't do anything interesting...
Code: Select all
guest@porteus:~$ grep -A1 "# Porteus" /var/log/porteus-livedbg
# Porteus data found in:
/mnt/sdc/porteus

^ Interesting. After what donald has said, think it would be informative for time being, if could also give output of:until someone can explain what brokenman meant by full system information dump.

Oh, now I see, sdb/sdc - it was confusing, because sometimes I had plug in my external HDD, and sometimes not. My apologize.

Re: I don't understand...
Oooh sh*t, for me it was so hard to understand how to properly use the cheatcode EXIT, so everything was so slow without using it...
I know the write speed to USB stick is slow, but anyway, without the EXIT cheatcode it feels like there is something wrong with Porteus, because the write speed is not slow, but very very slow.
I could not imagine why is the whole system freezy if Porteus need write something to USB stick. Is it not a background process when Porteus is writing changes to USB stick? Or need Porteus wait for writing process and then read what was just written?

Re: I don't understand...
OK, ext4 but still sdc only.
I do not know what linux mint has done but it seems that a filesystem
has been directly written to the physical device
without any partition table.
(A removable device configured that way can be referred to as a "superfloppy")
What now?
I could ask you to give us the outcome of this and that "nerdy" command, i do not.
To be more practical and to bring it to an hopefully succesful end, i suggest to
install porteus onto another, properly formatted usb thumb drive, while using porteus.
(avoid the linux mint tools)
If everything works (better then), zero out the the first few K of the old thumb-drive
before re-partitioning/re-formatting it for "normal" use.

Re: I don't understand...
It is not so easy. I wanna 1 partition, but using "Menu > System > Create Porteus live USB" leads to 2 partitions. I also tried run "Porteus-installer-for-Linux.com" as root, but it reply "Permission Denied".
UPDATE: Right now I check the "Allow this file to run as a program" under "Properties" of "Porteus-installer-for-Linux.com", and it seems everything should be OK now...

Grrr, it is not OK. "Always Fresh mode" is ok, but "Graphics mode" is bad - I must log in as Root. And when I log in as root, the whole wi-fi is disabled or something like that (I do not remember exact sentence)...
This is crazy, it feels like Porteus is joke for beginners or beginners are forced to learn Linux
